Teddyfish Bags

isn't it lovely? simple yet so gorgeous. teddyfish is a new start up based in paris who creates bags which are strong and simple for daily use, and with colors that bring a soft and poetic touch. the bags are made from raw cotton canvas, and hand painted using colored latex to created a unique gradient for each bag.

i find it amazing that they created something so right, so stylish for their debut collection. everything is so artisanal: they design, create and sell all by themselves. i find it even more intriguing that they are still looking for retailers to stock their products. i don't think it will take long then. they are also working on their online shop at the moment. very entrepreneurial.

my favourite is the 3/LTX/TF, a large bag with dual handles, painted in blue and accentuated with a red stud in the middle. absolutely lovely.

don't you just love it when someone sets out to do what they love, with such a clear vision, so compelling that their enthusiasm rubs off on you? even the direction of the lookbook is carefully produced. the vibrant colors reminded me of my 35mm film experimenting days. i used to shoot on slide film and cross processed in normal film chemicals (c41) to achieve those wildly exciting cinematic effects. but they told me it was all digital. i need to go for photoshop lessons!

besides the larger model, they also produce the 2/LTX/TF which is more vertical. don't they just get the gradient so right? the bags reminded me slightly of the ones from ysl raspail totes where they dipped it in paint to achieve a gradient effect, but i believed those were printed, whereas these are really artisanal, each piece really is different.

really love their vision, their effort, their quest to being a little summer to our world. click here to find out more about their bags.

now i really want one of th00o00se!

Balenciaga Fall Winter 2009 on Yoox.com

if you have been following this blog for sometime, you would have known i am a big balenciaga fan. their menswear pieces are hard to come by and just not many stocklists around. and even with several locations selling balenciaga menswear in london, buyers sometimes just do not stock the pieces that i want. hence i really love yoox.com, an online treasure trove full of past season products, some dating back several years too. it's like net-a-porter's theoutnet.com, but with menswear!

and what do i find this week:

balenciaga fall winter 2009 / yoox.com

pardon the really drab display. when you are paddling high end designer goods (outlet or not), photography and styling really sells. look past the terrible styling and you'll find an amazing padded quilted biker jacket, and a wool coat with zip details, both key pieces from balenciaga fall winter 2009:

balenciaga fall winter 2009 / balenciaga.com

the green quilted jacket is my absolute favourite from that collection, but i couldn't find one in my size in london, so i opted for the version in black, which i love so dearly, it's my favourite winter jacket right now. i opted for one size smaller for a really snug fit, but otherwise true to size is my advise. the jacket originally retailed for about £900, now at a fraction of the price, available online here.

black eyed peas / pic credit: getty images

will.i.am from the black eyed peas wore the black wool coat to an awards ceremony back in november 2009. and now the exact same coat made it's way to yoox.com! even more amazingly, the coat is now retailing for £308. if i remembered correctly, the coat originally retailed for £1,100+.

balenciaga fall winter 2009 / balenciaga.com

since i am nice enough to share where i get my balenciaga fixes, if you do see the above jacket on the left in size 38, also from fall winter 2009, available on yoox.com, please shout, yell, grab and do anything to get my attention. I NEED and have been searching for a l00o00ng time!

love outlet shopping, even more so if it's online!

Trussardi 1911 iPad Covers

trussardi 1911 ipad cases / pics credit: trussardi

following on yesterday's ipad cover from dunhill, here's a sneak preview of three ipad cases from trussardi 1911: one in the house's signature camouflage print in coated canvas, another in leopard print pony skin, and one in black brushed leather. i love it that it fits compactly, and there are slots on the inside, which is always handy. no prizes for guessing: my favourite is the camouflage print cover.

i've been thinking long and hard about the purchase of an ipad, if it really warrant that much use for me to invest in it. but doesn't stop me from ipad covers shopping though! the ipad cases from trussardi 1911 will be available around november 2010, prices starting from €195.

meanwhile, how about his amazing matchy matchy iphone cover? I LOVE!!! and i could so use it now! £70, available from trussardi1911.com.

00o00h i really want one of those!

Bradley Cooper in J.Lindeberg Spring Summer 2010 Suede Jacket

bradley cooper / pic credit: wenn/bauer griffin via justjared

bradley cooper was in london yesterday to promote his new movie, "the a-team". he was spotted outside the bbc studios in one of my favourite pieces from j.lindeberg spring summer 2010: the paprika colored suede jacket. yes, favourite, it was well documented back in september last year when i previewed the jacket.

my pic from j.lindeberg's studio

i love the suede jacket. it's really lightweight, simple, colorful and neverdull. it's from the previous season, so would be hard pushed to find it now.

really l00o00ve. going to hunt one down somehow.

Dunhill iPad Cover

dunhill ipad cover as featured in spring summer 2011 show / dunhill.com

here is a closer look at the ipad cover as featured in dunhill's spring 2011 collection, shown in paris back in june. the cover is printed with a letter addressed to 'alfred dunhill', along with 2 blue lines to look like the letter's been strapped in. interesting design, but i wish the cover was done in a different color to the pale cream shade. or the whole cover made to look like a letter to alfred dunhill.

& i am toying with the idea of an ipad...

Vintage Rolex Oyster Datejust Watches

(L to R) vintage rolex oyster datejust in cream, pink and blue dials / asos.com

the words "vintage" and "rolex" are enough to make my heart beats faster. add "oyster" and i might soon be foaming at the mouth. the above trio of watches (each sold separately) was recently added to online retailer asos.com. yes, besides dabbling in margiela inspired jewellery, they also stock a small selection of vintage watches.

the three watches above are amazing, all from the 70s with stainless steel jubilee bracelets/straps. i wonder if they belong to the same owner/collector, who is letting go of the collection now. and my heart is telling me to stop procrastinating and go for it. i can't think of any other watches more suitable/classic to start a vintage piece.

i would really love to hear your views on the below:

1. asos.com selling vintage rolex watches, what's your feeling?
2. the watches above were serviced but doesn't come with the original box and papers
3. frivolously, which color would you go for? cream, pink or blue dials?
4. any views you have on the watches

Please, comment away!

ASOS versus Maison Martin Margiela "Key" Ring

asos "key" ring, £6 / asos.com

maison martin margiela "key" ring circa 2009 / pic credit: oki-ni.com
dear asos, i see what you did there. even the number "11" remained unchanged! maison martin margiela allocates a number to each of their lines: menswear being number "10", womenswear "6", shoes "22", and accessories "11". hence the "11" on margiela's ring. i wonder what is the story behind asos's "11" ring.

asos "key" ring / pic credit: asos.com

but please forgive me maison martin margiela. at £6, i thought the ring looked pretty good on that rather biblical looking chap. and i think i might just succumb...

Fabric Strap Watches in Polo Ralph Lauren Ad Campaigns

polo ralph lauren advertising campaign

reader parth mehrotra emailed me the above 2 pictures, and asked if i am able to help with his query on the watches as seen on above polo ralph lauren's advertising campaign. he asked if those were watches by polo ralph lauren, or were there actually vintage.

his query pushes my buttons in every way, and i began a frantic attempt to find out more about the watches. if memory served me well, i remembered seeing these fabric strapped watches in their online store a while ago. the watches appeared in their advertising campaigns for several seasons, suggesting that this was a recurring/classic piece in their collections.

polo ralph lauren ad campaign / credit: scanned by nego00, thefashionspot.com

polo ralph lauren ad campaign / credit: scanned by nego00, thefashionspot.com

however in 2009, ralph lauren introduced a collection of high end watches with movement provided by the swiss watchmakers such as piaget, jaeger lecoultre and iwc. hence i believed the above fabric strap watches (which i also believe to be quartz) were discontinued, as the luxury timepieces were also branded as such. which is quite a shame, as i really like them too, quartz or not. there's something very charming and classic, about the pearl/champagne faced watch with the fabric straps.

parth also asked if there are any similar watches out there. the closest i could find right now are the timex military watches, where one could interchange the fabric straps as seen below:

fabric watch straps, US$10 to US$20, jcrew.com

with the straps retailing at US$10 to US$20, i would suggest getting a couple from the nine selections available on US retailer jcrew.com. the straps were meant to fit the timex military watch, but i supposed if the width is right it would fit other vintage watches out there. (ie, i am not very keen on the timex military...)

vintage rolex oyster watches circa 1964 - 1969, artcurial.com

i also believed that the watches were somewhat inspired by vintage rolex oysters from the 60s. these are pretty hard to find these days, but a couple of them do come up in artcurial's auctions time and again. those are my absolute favourites, but with me being a novice at vintage watches i still hesitate at bidding for one at auctions.

good spot parth, i hope you will find a similar watch soon. and if anyone has more information on the watches featured in the above polo ralph lauren ad campaigns, let us know!

Vans Vault Sk8 "Inca Flower" Sneakers

pic credit: streething via hypebeast

a few weeks ago i saw the above pair of vans sneakers at hypebeast and have been frantically searching for it ever since. call me ignorant, but i never knew vans did such lust worthy shoes. suede and ethic patterns??! is this why it's branded as vans vault and not just vans?

anyway, it's so close yet so far. i was thrilled to bits that oki-ni.com stocks the vans vault inca flower sneakers, but in green suede and red fabric instead. love it i do, but i still prefer the muted grey/blue with the purple fabric. i am holding out, anyone knows where in london, or which online retailer stocks it, hit me up!

Topman LTD Equestrian

the summer sales are slowing coming to their end now. fall items are gradually arriving in stores, which makes me very happy as fall winter has always been my favourite seasons for clothing. reader and blogger "luxuryobsessed" got me very excited by letting me know that the prada moleskin coat with double woolly collars are already in stores. a visit to prada is imminent.

and besides that, topman is another store i have to visit. i try to avoid it for the past month as their shopfloor is like a battlefield with the ongoing summer sales, but i think it's safe to attack and conquer now. their latest collection from topman ltd was titled "equestrian". i love the gorgeous browns and mustards and khakis: very romantic colors. one of the favourites would be the above slim fit pleated linen and cotton chinos. clever use of summery fabrics as we are really still in the midst of a glorious summer.

love the slouchiness and relaxed feel to it, i need to try them. the trousers are also available online here.

i love corduroy trousers, and it is so difficult to find a pair that is cut slim enough to be flattering and not frumpy. the color and buttons detailing is perfect, but i must admit i really dislike the patchwork by the knees. a gorgeous pair of ralph lauren looking cords suddenly is feeling a bit undecided.

but heck i'll definitely try it in stores. the trousers are also available online here.

if you've seen pics that i took from their press day, you would recognise this quilted sweatshirt as one of my key picks. the corduroy elbow patches made all the difference. at £36, I NEED!

my love for all things quilted knows no end. the grey quilted jacket comes with a black corduroy collar. it's a difficult look to achieve, but pairing it with the slim fit trousers above should do it nicely. i would get a size down to make it fit snuggly too. another must try for me, gosh the trip is immmmminent.

accessories wise, i really like the horse print tie. at £10, it really could do no wrong. i'll definitely pick one up.

yes, the whole reason why i did this post, was because i wanted to show you this!!! i have no more vocabulary left to describe this shoe. the soles, the metal eyelets, the black leather padding, the color, ohmygod i am going to spend a lot of me-time with the shoes when i am in store, which will be very soon. meanwhile, the shoes are also available online here.

totally l00o00ve!

The Feeling Is Perhaps Not So Miuccia

patrizio bertelli, CEO of prada, with wife miuccia prada.

things took an interesting turn in prada's finances last week. there were reports of a chinese businessman, who allegedly acquired 13% of prada's shareholdings over the past two years. prada disputed the reports, saying that the family still owns about 95% of the company, while the remaining 5% by italian bank banca intesa sanpaolo. interestingly, prada then announced a day later, that they agreed terms for a new €360m loan from a consortium of banks, in part to service an old loan while also to finance new store openings.

prada fall winter 2010 / prada.com

for most years, prada has been profitable. with collections that are loved by critics and consumers (not an easy feat to achieve acclaimed reviews and commercial success), it is not entirely a huge surprise. for the first quarter of 2010, prada reported sales of €366m, a 26% increase as compared to the same period in 2009. earnings were up 480% from €11m to €60m. despite the stellar results in recent years, prada's finances have always been a huge woe. in particular the huge debt that they are carrying. back in january, the debt stood at about €1.3 billion.

an astonishing amount of debt, for what is largely a privately owned company.

eversince the financial bloodbaths of the investment banks, regulators and investors are not just interested about the sales and profits made (profit and loss statements), but also the resources used to achieve the sales (balance sheets). as prada is a privately owned company, financial data are not widely available. but it was suggested that the company was in debt as far back as 1998, which doesn't really surprise me either since most companies would choose between debt or equity (shares issue), and for a company wishing to stay independent and private, prada chose to take on loans and debts.

reading into the history of prada, i found it interesting that they actually acquired about 9.5% of shares in gucci back in 1998. with gucci being at the centre of a takeover war, prada sold their shareholdings to LVMH for a nice tidy profit. with prada's debts, it was apparent that they were unable to mount a successful takeover of gucci, hence the sale of shares. however gucci resisted the further takeover attempts by LVMH, and sold the majority of their shareholdings to francois pinault, which now forms the crown jewel of the PPR empire.

silvia fendi and karl lagerfeld, fendi spring 2010 / getty images

the cordial relationship between prada and LVMH post gucci shares sale continued into 1999. together, they bought 51% shareholdings in italian luxury house fendi for US$520m. however under pressure from their bankers to pay off the huge debts, in 2001 prada then sold their share in fendi to LVMH.

helmut lang fall winter 1996 / thefashionspot.com

besides the investment in gucci and fendi in the 90s, the more prominent investments from prada were the acquisitions of helmut lang and jil sander in 1999, which saw prada paying about US$100m each for the two companies. the move created a huge outcry, with many accusing lang and sander to be a sell-out to the more commercially driven prada. with the commercial acumen of patrizio bertelli at prada and the creative teams at lang and sander, the new structure should really work. but mergers and acquisitions often doesn't take into account of human emotions. and we all knew lang and sander both walked out of their namesake companies.

it was again reported that under pressure from bankers to finance their loans, bertelli needed a quick turnaround for helmut lang and jil sander, hence the more commercial approach and introduction of logo emblazoned accessories from helmut lang not long after the prada takeover. presumably under pressure to finance their loans, prada then sold their investment in helmut lang to current owners link theory, and jil sander to a private equity firm.

and it is interesting to see prada growing the company through acquisitions in the 90s, whereas other similar private companies the likes of armani and versace developed diffusion lines to grow organically.

left: prada cotton weekender, £475 / prada.com
right: prada cotton backpack, £340 / prada.com

the strategy of growing by acquisitions in the 90s seemed to have changed. prada is now concentrating their efforts on growing prada mainline as well as diffusion line miu miu. there were earlier reports that prada needed to raise cash fast in order to service their loans. is that the reason why we are seeing more lower priced and entry-level products, like the printed cotton bags above?

left: prada hemp tote, £320 / prada.com
right: prada printed nylon "BYOB", £180 / prada.com

is the need to desperately pay off loans the reason why we are seeing much more lower priced bags from prada mainline. i always maintain my view, that what we see in shops is not really a direct result of what is cutting edge or fashionable, but a byproduct of commercial decisions. of course, prada sold the above bags alongside other expensive and exquisite creations, treading along what miuccia wants (high fashion) and what bertelli needs (erm, cash).

very clever.

prada spring summer 2010 by yang fudong / prada.com

prada could have concentrated on what they have on their plates at the moment and work towards paying off the huge loan. but they see china as a huge opportunity, a reason why they took on an additional €360m loan last week. this will allow them to finance the opening of new stores in china, which many agreed will be the biggest consumers of luxury products.

i personally think prada will do very well in the chinese market. if i can be crude and honest (that's the difference between blogs and magazines, no?), the first generation of the new found wealth affluent chinese consumers are big on logos and the carrie bradshaw culture: "i want my money where i (and others) can see them." i could be generalising and typecasting, but no offense intended. different cuts, different strokes. prada, with the clever use of their triangular logo on their accessories, and miu miu with their logos etched on almost every of their bags, will certainly do very well in that market.

and prada knew. they collaborated with chinese artist yang fudong on a mini movie/campaign called "first spring" which was shot entirely in china. it is my favourite prada campaign to date, and one that fuses chinese heritage and cultures so well without appearing to be patronising like many of the other fashion houses out there.

we know accessories is the most profitable part of the luxury retail business. penetrating the new market will be vital to them staying afloat. and talking of float, the many talks of prada floating on the stock exchange could be soon. markets are on the up, the successful float of the business would help repay prada's loans and ease the financial pressures. that would mean relinquishing some of their 95% shareholding, but also an exit plan for bertelli and miuccia who are in their 60s.

top: prada fall winter 2010 lookbook / prada.com
bottom: prada menswear fall winter 2010 / prada.com

so what is my point? none really. i just find it fascinating that prada is in so much debt. profitable with sales but achieved through massive financing and borrowings. perhaps we should really pay more attention to the resources used to generate the sales, at what sacrifice. but who am i to say their business model is flawed. for a family who wanted to keep the company private, control comes at a price.

it was reported that the company could be worth between €3 to €4 billion if it floats on the stock exchange. not bad for a family run business huh? the feeling is perhaps not mutual now, but they will have the last laugh.

and oh, my point is i really really like the coat above, which i think is moleskin cotton with wool double layered collars. after all the ditterings above, i decided that will be my winter investment coat this year. the buyer for the london stores better pick that piece or else words will be had. that will be my little effort to help prada pay off the loans. you're welcome, don't mention it.
