Top 10 blog posts of 2011

in previous years, i often look back at the year that has passed by summarising on the number of shoes i've accumulated that year. indulgent but playful recaps on the highlight of the years. but i've really not bought that many pairs of shoes this year, no i really haven't. so i thought why not do a recap of the most popular blog posts for 2011, which ones are a hit with the search engines, which ones do people link back. all hail google analytics, and results are somewhat interesting.

i present you, the 2011 top 10 most read blog posts from this blog:

10. david gandy at north audley street, london

how interesting, a picture i snapped by chance at north audley street and blog posted in 2009 would be the 10th most read blog post in 2011. never underestimate the power of david gandy searches on the search engines. read the full post here.

9. robert pattinson in dries van noten

robert pattinson / ph: reuters, mario anzuoni

twilight heart-throb robert pattinson attending the 2011 people's choice awards in january this year was also a popular blog post. his unusual choice of the dries van noten jacket generated a considerable number of link backs and internet searches. read the full post here.

8. christian louboutin python skin lace-ups

ph: carlos souza

another blog post from 2009 which became the 8th most read blog post this year, was the introduction of the above insanely gorgeous python lace-ups, belonging to blogger carlos souza. there are considerable interest in christian louboutin shoes for men, and i do talk a lot about them, so it's no surprise this is one of the most searched and linked back blog post. read the full post here.

7. fashion three-way

ph: details magazine

before you get too excited by the title, this blog post from 2009 (am i that boring in 2011??) looks at three subtle tweaks to a guy's styling, how it will change someone's look completely. originally from details magazine US, i gave my little two cents worth. still not sure how this is the 7th most read blog post in 2011, but read the full post here.

6. hidetoshi nakata [中田英寿] in burberry prorsum

one of my style icons, the uber hip japanese footballer/model hidetoshi nakata in an equally delectable burberry prorsum biker jacket, snapped by street style photographer extraordinaire mr. tommy ton at paris fashion week earlier this year. the 6th most read blog post this year, read it in full here.

5. those christian louboutin for marlon gobel shoes

christian louboutin for marlon gobel / ph: neilson barnard, getty images

definitely one of the fashion highlights this year: the absolutely stunning shoes christian louboutin made for marlon gobel's fall winter 2011 collection. i knew i was one of the first (if not the first...) to publish the pics, and thanks to massive link backs and huge interest in the shoes, this was the 5th most read blog post this year. relive the magic, read the full blog here.

4. backstage with sean o'pry at versace

everyone's favourite male model, mr. sean o'pry backstage at versace. seems like ages ago i attended a show in milan, i mustered up enough courage to ask for a picture. lots of link backs at forums, read the full post here.

now for the top three...

3. zara man versus balmain homme

not at all surprising, this popular blog post from 2010 shows the uncanny resemblance in styling and blatant copying by the spanish high street giant, with reference to a small capsule collection from the venerable balmain homme. very much retweeted in japan and linked back, this is one of my favourite blog posts really. read it in full here.

2. hermes espadrilles

very bizarrely, a seemingly unimportant and frivolous blog post i did in 2009 about hermes espadrilles, became the 2nd most read blog post this year. but google analytics never lie, go find out what the fuss is about. read the post in full here.

1. petra ecclestone and james stunt at form clothing launch

proof that everyone loves a good gossip, this snapshot that almost never happened formed the most read blog post of my blog for 2011. why? because the billionairess got married this year, and everyone wanted to know who is james stunt, the lucky man marrying petra ecclestone. there weren't a lot of pictures of the rather publicity shy james stunt, so the above pic was rather well viewed from the search engines. i attended the launch of form clothing at matches fashion marylebone high street, one of the many business ventures of ms ecclestone (form, not matches...). when i was about to leave, i spotted the pair outside chatting away, and politely asked if i could take a picture of petra. mr. james stunt very nicely moved away, but i suggested a picture of them both instead. and that, became the most viewed blog post this year. read the full post here.

interesting results indeed. thank you to all for a wonderful year, to the 32% increase in readership this year, to the 50% of mac users and the 44% of you using your safari browsers to view my blog, not forgetting the 2.45% of you viewing on your ipads. i thank you all for a wonderful year, and wishing you a great year ahead.

Yesterday I wore...

post christmas break, went back to the office in admittedly an outfit that's rather "smart casual fridays". but it's the period between christmas and new year, and most still feeling merry so hey why not. it's properly busy in the office, covering for everyone else who is out of office, and tying up all the loose strings before the year ends.

i think the term is called fire fighting, and i did it in my polo ralph lauren camel colored cardigan, j.crew brown checked shirt, brown alfred dunhill lizard belt, grey topman trousers, acne brown lace-ups, a little vintage jaeger lecoultre and smelling of marc jacobs basil sorbet splash. admittedly a little dress up as i thought we were going out for dinner after work but that got postponed to another day. so you can't blame me for hitting the shops instead.

but didn't buy anything. "austerity measures", such dirty words.

cha cha cha in my acne lace-ups...

with my favourite and well worn ally capellino for tate museum bag...

with my gucci fall winter 2007 moleskin military coat.

what lovely fitting rooms they have at urban outfitters. and i love this "shore leave navy birdseye crew knit, but alas they don't have it in my size. "austerity measures"...

hope you are having much more shopping fun than i do.

Yesterday I wore...

boxing day, went out for a little walk in my alexander mcqueen blazer, john varvatos t-shirt, banana republic striped cashmere scarf, diesel black gold distressed jeans, common projects sneakers and smelling of marc jacobs basil sorbet splash.

would have lied if i said i did not pick up anything from the boxing day sales. been eyeing this oversized balmain homme striped cotton pullover for a long time, glad i managed to find one in my size.

the striped pullover also came with several "hand made treatments", a used and distressed feel that ex balmain creative director christophe decarnin loves. however current designer olivier rousteing wanted to move away from that per a recent interview.

well, i no longer have to worry about moths eating my clothes anymore.

taking a break...

the balmain homme fall winter 2011 striped shirt is also available online from mr. porter, and currently also included in their sale.

Tom Cruise in Giorgio Armani - 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' Premiere at Dubai International Film Festival

mission impossible - ghost protocol dubai premiere / ph: andrew h. walker, getty images

it is "mission impossible" to find a decent full length picture of tom cruise at tuesday's night film premiere of "mission impossible - ghost protocol". the red carpet event at dubai's international film festival was cluttered with minders, aides, ushers, sheikhs, photographers, fans and just about everyone else. and it's a shame, because tom looks really good in his custom designed made-to-measure suit from giorgio armani. the midnight blue tux featured contrasting black silk lapels, very cool even when mr. cruise decided not to finish it off with a bow tie.

giorgio armani sketch / giorgio armani

tom cruise reprises his role as ethan hunt in the "mission impossible" franchise, and the same suit was worn in a pivotal scene in "ghost protocol". can't wait for the movie release.

Jamie Bell in Dior Homme - New.Music.Live at MuchMusic HQ

jamie bell and lauren toyota / ph: george pimental, getty images

jamie bell attended the new.music.live show in toronto a few days back, and was pictured in a jacket that i really love. he wore a jersey jacket with leather trim details from dior homme fall winter 2011. i love the simplicity of the jacket, highlighted with the sleek leather details around the collar. simple yet chic, i thought jamie looked great.

the dior homme jacket is also available online from luisa via roma.

Aesop, Redchurch Street

i dropped by aesop's store at shoreditch last week to have a little look see. situated at the fashionably hip end of redchurch street, the store is simple in decor but yet so chic. i really love their simple no frills industrialised and almost clinical product packaging.

lab coats were hung on one side of the store, mirroring their latest release of science themed products.

on the other side, we have these two rustic old school basins which i really want for my flat which i haven't bought and funds not yet saved, but that's another story. nice decor aside, i visited the shop as i wanted to get some ideas on christmas gifts. after much testing and products coaching, these are my five favourites:

is fabric wash a non-mainstream christmas gift? i wouldn't mind this on my christmas wishlist at all. i handwash my wool and cashmere knitwear, so this is great. the great big clinical brown bottle of fabric wash is a special collaboration with french fashion label APC. this will sit pretty on the shelves, and at £23 makes a great christmas gift for someone who takes care of themselves. it makes the gifter looks thoughtful and the receiver going "ooooo where did you find this!".

something more mainstream for christmas gifts: the parsley seed facial cleanser. i was told it was one of their best sellers. it smells lovely, i tried it myself and i love the clean after feeling. at £23 for 100ml, it's a great stocking filler.

mentioned the lab coats and science themed products earlier, and here's one of them. i think "accelerating universe" makes a great gift as it contains a cleaner, a scrub and a moisturiser. great basics that most guys will appreciate.

all three products are travel sized, which is very handy. depending on the budget, at £65 it might be a little pricey but this makes a luxurious gift. i am sending this picture as a hint to my brother.

another item that caught my eye is the shaving brush. made from badger bristle, it's small enough to be taken on travels. it's quite a luxury to shave with a brush and foam, it's the luxury of time that most can't seem to afford these days. to be honest, i've never used a shaving brush before, but as they demonstrated in store, it's not that difficult nor time consuming:

a little bit of their shaving serum and we whisk it like we make a meringue.

the really clever bit, is that the beaver bristles can be screwed off...

... and slotted in backwards, and re-screwed on, making it easy and practical for storage/travelling. clever!

lastly, a fragrance i've featured on here before: marrakech. as the name suggests, it conjures up images of the souk and spice bazaar but not in an overpowering way. scent of cardamom lingers on long after i left the shop. a definite difference to the usual high street generic fragrance, this really makes a great christmas gift.

it's meant to be a top five selection, but can't help throwing this in: the alcohol hand wash (ie no water needed) is a great stocking filler, throw it in!

the products are also available online from liberty london. do you have a personal favourite?
